Humanist organizations, which are part of the global humanist movement, have a shared philosophy, and it is not what you define it to be. You might of course conttinue to define it your way, it will just not mean what is otherwise meant by it, therefore not helping in communication.

Richard: Your comment is akin to saying that everyone who doesn't believe Jesus was the son of God must be Jews, because Jews don't believe Jesus was the son of God.Johnnynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905686568472747305.post-104258765645754512014-03-09T09:14:20.045+00:002014-03-09T09:14:20.045+00:00I am not a humanist; I am an atheist.

I define humanism as an idea that human is the measure of all things as put forth by Protagoras. I mean it as an epistemological, ontological and ethical view that one does not seek answers from a higher authority. That definition excludes belief in gods. I define humanism more broadly that Steven Law because I would include all forms of Marxism like Stalin and Mao in humanism provided that they actually believed in Marxism and were not just psychopaths who used it as a tool.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18044030615717439425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905686568472747305.post-84341684959485687632014-02-12T11:26:01.384+00:002014-02-12T11:26:01.384+00:00A secular humanist is an individualist whose behav...A secular humanist is an individualist whose behaviour oscillates between individual freedom of action (i.e. the "critical thinking" commandment) without regard to the group "i.e. their audience" approving of their actions OR behaving in such a manner to seek justification of their actions from the group (i.e. not using their critical thinking, perhaps acting craven).

A humanist will always oscillate between the two...

This is why there is such a plethora of humanist associations...this is a humanist's audience to seek a approval...and not say...a God for a religious person.

For some people...a humanist is like a soft spoken English philospher...for others a humanist is like a Burmese drug lord....Philip Randhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09143527524267821692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905686568472747305.post-90193691908944792872014-01-15T11:01:02.270+00:002014-01-15T11:01:02.270+00:00The Hoffman Law Group is a legal adviser firm.The...The Hoffman Law Group is a legal adviser firm. They know about the humanism.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12520861617129902139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1905686568472747305.post-13005673908403420812014-01-11T10:27:36.462+00:002014-01-11T10:27:36.462+00:00I sympathize with secular humanism, but I'm a ...I sympathize with secular humanism, but I'm a bit concerned with #4. In moral philosophy I'm a Humean and thus think that morality is rooted in our emotions and empathy (or "passions" and "sympathy" as Hume expressed it), shaped by evolutionary natural selection. It is thus based on our feelings, not on existing facts "out there" like for example facts in physics. Is this incompatible with humanism?Johnnynoreply@blogger.com
